Congress Creates Health Care Deserts for Millions While States Push Women Away from Qualified Care & Toward Clinics That Can’t Handle Medical Emergencies

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives sent the final budget bill to Donald Trump’s desk, which will make the largest cut to Medicaid in program history, taking away health care coverage for 17 million Americans, harming Americans’ ability to get medical care of any kind, but especially threatening access to non-abortion reproductive and maternal care. At the same time, Republican lawmakers across the country are driving women away from evidence-based care and are funneling millions of taxpayer dollars to unregulated pregnancy clinics.

In response, Reproductive Health and Freedom Watch Executive Director Debra Rosen released the following statement:

“While Republicans in Congress gut Medicaid, the health care lifeline for millions of low-income families, Republican lawmakers in 15 states have simultaneously funneled nearly $300 million in taxpayer dollars to unregulated pregnancy clinics that are medically unequipped to handle emergencies. This coordinated federal and state assault on women’s health care is creating a deadly gap: Congress is slashing funding for evidence-based medical care while states push women toward clinics that can’t provide lifesaving treatment for conditions like ectopic pregnancies. The result isn’t just bad policy – it’s a public health disaster that will leave women without care when they need it most.”
